Electronics Technician Job Description

NSF's NOIRLab is seeking an Electronics Technician to join its Electrical/Electronics Engineering (EE) group. This team is responsible for providing excellence in the design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance of all electrical and physical plant equipment at the telescopes and observatories' instrumentation.

The successful candidate will be part of a unique opportunity to work in an international, collaborative environment and participate in a wide variety of projects. This position is located at the Gemini North telescope on Maunakea, Hawai'i.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and repair telescope systems
  • Assemble and troubleshoot electronic components
  • Disassemble and assemble non-electronic equipment
  • Perform daily checks of telescope systems for night operations
  • Support laser maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Identify and order proper components for telescope and instrument systems
  • Maintain labs at summit and the Hilo base facility
  • Maintain test equipment and keep test equipment certifications current
  • Create and modify documentation of telescope and instrument systems
  • Inventory test equipment and 2-way radios
  • Participate in team support for summit operations, including physical labor, snow clearing, and housekeeping
  • Comply with applicable safety standards and ensure the safety of operations in areas under purview
Requirements:
  • A.S. Degree in Electronics Technology
  • Ability to repair electronic devices, circuit boards, and small connectors
  • Ability to multitask and execute work as directed by the supervisor
  • Knowledge of Windows and PC-based computer programs and understanding of electronics and electrical circuits
  • Able to utilize electronic test equipment
  • Able to safely operate manlifts, overhead cranes, and forklifts
  • Able to work on projects or assignments with minimal supervision
  • Full English verbal, reading, and writing fluency
  • Able to work effectively at heights and at high altitude
  • Valid State of Hawai'i driver's license and clean driving record
