Job Overview
This role involves executing specialized tasks to install, replace, and maintain all traffic signage and markings for the Traffic Department of the City of Alexandria.
Work is conducted under the guidance of the Superintendent, Traffic, and positions may require availability for emergency call-outs at any time.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute technical duties to install, replace, and maintain traffic signs and markings throughout the city.
- Paint and mark parking areas, curbs, and pedestrian crossings; trim vegetation obstructing street signs.
- Assist in the setup of barricades, detours, and other traffic control measures during special events; aid in street closures and maintain safety equipment.
- Ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations as per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); collaborate with other city departments and assist relevant authorities with traffic management.
- Maintain an inventory of signage; order replacement materials as necessary; install traffic counters and analyze data; prepare work orders and material estimates.
- Utilize tools and equipment for the fabrication of non-stock signs; operate a bucket truck for hanging banners and flags.
- Conduct inspections and maintenance of vehicles, ensuring safe operation and performing routine upkeep; recommend major repairs or replacements as needed.
- Operate various machinery and tools, including jack hammers, post pullers, chainsaws, drill presses, laser stripers, and landscaping equipment.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in street maintenance, particularly in traffic sign installation and pavement markings preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license upon appointment.
- Must secure a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one (1) month of hire.
- Must obtain and maintain IMSA Work Zone Safety certification within six (6) months of hire and Signs and Marking Level I certification within one year of hire.
