Job Title: RN Birth Assistant

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate RN Birth Assistant to join our team at Community of Hope. As a key member of our Birth Center, you will provide essential support to our Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Job Summary:

The RN Birth Assistant is responsible for assisting CNMs with non-clinical duties and serving as the second on-site staff member with CPR and NRP certifications. This is a PRN/On-Call position, scheduled on an as-needed basis at our Family Health and Birth Center in NE DC.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up the birth room for clients in labor, including checks of emergency equipment
  • Maintain a comfortable, clean environment in the birth room
  • Provide ongoing support for clients and families as appropriate from admit to discharge
  • Check maternal vital signs, fetal heart tones, and neonate vital signs at intervals according to policy and practice guidelines, reporting any abnormal values to the midwife
  • Assist CNMs with tasks surrounding delivery of the infant, including ensuring that needed instruments are within reach, assisting with drying and stimulating the neonate, and assisting with emergency procedures as dictated by the CNM
  • Return the birth room to its original condition following discharge of patients, including cleaning, restocking, sterilizing instruments and tub, removing waste and biohazard materials, replacing instruments used, doing laundry, and making the bed
  • Report supplies that need to be ordered, equipment in need of repair, and other birth center needs as appropriate
  • Note the time of all standard and emergency procedures, including vital signs, ROM, birth placenta delivery, all emergency procedures, and medications given
Requirements:
  • A current, unencumbered DC Registered Nurse license is required
  • Experience attending a minimum of 20 labors and births is required; experience with out-of-hospital births is a plus
  • Valid CPR and NRP certifications are required
  • Completion of skills test on or before the first day of employment is required
  • Commitment to work with underserved populations is required
  • Ability to work in a non-profit environment is required
  • Proof of required vaccinations is required, including but not limited to, Flu and Covid
