Job Summary

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a skilled and compassionate Juvenile Detention Counselor to join our team. As a key member of our juvenile detention program, you will play a vital role in providing guidance, support, and supervision to youth in our care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and counsel youth in our detention program, promoting positive behavior and providing individualized support.
  • Develop and implement service plans to address the unique needs of each youth, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Conduct educational and life skills groups, promoting positive outcomes and reducing recidivism.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a safe and secure environment for all youth, adhering to policies and procedures.
  • Perform searches, monitor activities, and maintain accurate records, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Prepare behavioral evaluation summaries for affiliated agencies, promoting effective communication and collaboration.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, education, counseling, or a related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience working with youth, preferably in a detention setting.
  • Current and valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and be available for overtime as needed.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and current tuberculin test.
  • Acceptable background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or social work.
  • Experience supervising juveniles in a detention center setting.
  • Experience facilitating individual and group counseling sessions for youth.
  • Experience with behavior management and crisis intervention.
