Job Summary:
The Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing legal advice, assistance, and representation to eligible clients in a compassionate and trauma-informed manner. This includes representing clients in court hearings, administrative proceedings, and advising sexual assault survivors over a telephone hotline.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and information to crime victims regarding their rights and offer legal counseling to victims regarding risks associated with proposed legal action.
- Conduct intake interviews, confirm eligibility for services, check for conflicts of interest, and take appropriate action to address the client's legal problem.
- Represent clients in court hearings and administrative proceedings, and advocate on behalf of victims in criminal cases and parole proceedings.
- Cultivate working relationships with network partners and other social services agencies to advance program and organizational goals.
- Lead or assist with promoting education efforts statewide and in local programs, including developing, presenting, or participating in public speeches and trainings.
- Travel to locations outside of Austin to address client issues, further education efforts, or meet on partner agency matters.
Requirements:
- J.D. Degree and licensure by the Supreme Court of Texas.
- Minimum of two years of experience assisting victims of crime, particularly victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, in a legal setting.
- Experience making presentations to large audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding spoken Spanish).
Working Conditions:
The Staff Attorney will work in a fast-paced environment, providing legal services to victims of violent crime. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
