About the Role

The OR Clinical Nurse & Surgical Tech Educator plays a central role in the clinical education of surgical tech trainees and nurses looking to expand their roles within the ASC with further training. They are responsible for introducing the student to clinical responsibilities through real-world knowledge and experience and are responsible for monitoring student educational progress and for supervising student activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reviews student progress in clinical education through school programs (online or in-person programs);
  • Reviews and is familiar with the Program clinical rotation objectives;
  • Orients new students and new employees to the department, the availability and location of educational resources, and safety precautions and emergency protocols;
  • Provides the student with a variety of patient encounters necessary for an appropriate learning experience and assigns appropriate cases to each student;
  • Alters assignments as necessary to suit student needs;
  • Makes himself/herself available for students' questions and learning needs;
  • Exhibits professional, responsible behavior and serves as a role model for students;
  • Creates a positive and supportive learning environment, including being an advocate for the student's status as a learner;
  • Promotes patient and student safety and takes appropriate corrective actions when necessary;
  • Observes student performance to ensure they follow proper protocol and technique;
  • Objectively evaluates and assesses student performance and offers timely, constructive feedback regarding strengths and opportunities for improvement;
  • Meets with the student daily to review individual progress and discuss plan for next clinical day;
  • Meets regularly with the OR Nurse Manager/Program Coordinator to maintain productive two-way communication between the program and Operating Room personnel;
  • At the end of the rotation, discusses the Clinical Evaluation Form with each student, attempting to provide guidance for future performance;
  • Participates in continuing education seminars and professional development opportunities in order to maintain current, state-of-the-art knowledge and skills;
  • Assists with ongoing education within the ASC Network for Nurses and Surgical techs related to changes in workflow, best practices, cross-training, and site orientation;
  • When not training, works in the ASC as a Circulating Nurse or Surgical Tech, or is assigned additional education tasks, such as developing education modules for staff or conducting mock codes.
About You

We're looking for a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Nurse & Surgical Tech Educator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Associates with 5+ years of nursing experience;
  • 3 years' experience in the OR as a RN with surgical tech skills and sound knowledge base of the procedural techniques applied in surgery;
  • Extensive background in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology;
  • Love of teaching and supporting students through their education to reach their goals;
  • Previous experience building curriculum for educational purposes;
  • Experience or education in learning styles, building curriculum, educational processes;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate honestly with those being trained on progress and ability to coach students towards success using a variety of methods;
  • Organized, able to set priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Proficient computer skills;
  • Collaborative teamwork skills;
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
