Job Summary

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a highly skilled Gardener Supervisor to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of our parks and gardens. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for directing a crew of gardening and ground maintenance employees, ensuring the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise a team of gardening and ground maintenance employees to achieve exceptional results in water pond plants and other aquatic plants.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies for producing annual plants, cut flowers, pot plants, and water plants.
  • Supervise employees engaged in pruning and trimming trees and shrubs to achieve desired shapes, sizes, and growth characteristics.
  • Apply standard fertilizing procedures to sterilize soil, increase or decrease pH levels, and adjust nutrient content to meet plant requirements.
  • Monitor work in progress to ensure that work assignments and instructions are carried out effectively.
  • Plan and distribute workloads to subordinates, balancing tasks and resources to meet deadlines.
  • Enter and track data using the Parks FMSS system or similar maintenance management system.
  • Manage greenhouses and ensure optimal growing conditions.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including time and attendance reports, leave records, and equipment sheets.
  • Counsel and evaluate employees for performance ratings.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is subject to a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
  • Valid driver's license is required, and you must be able to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of your official duties.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • You may be designated as emergency essential and will be required to work call-back and emergency overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a respirator fit test.
  • You must possess or be able to obtain all necessary pesticide applicator licenses.
  • You must be able to lift 50 pounds.
