Overview:
The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing various technical duties to assist in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. This includes preparing the patient's skin in accordance with established hospital protocols and maintaining strict aseptic techniques to prevent any breaches. The Surgical Technologist also provides emotional support and comfort to patients, ensuring their privacy and dignity are respected. Responsibilities extend to transporting patients to and from the Operating Room and positioning them appropriately based on the surgical procedure. Additionally, the technologist is responsible for identifying and managing biological specimens and preparing the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies tailored to the specific surgical case.
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH-NB) is a comprehensive healthcare facility located in downtown New Braunfels, featuring 94 private beds and a commitment to expanding services to meet the growing needs of the community. The hospital utilizes advanced equipment and innovative procedures, offering a range of services including outpatient imaging, orthopedic and surgical care, rehabilitation, a modern birthing center with 24/7 neonatal coverage, emergency services, wound care, and comprehensive cardiac care, from diagnostics to open-heart surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
• Uphold the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Under the supervision of a registered nurse, execute all tasks related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.
• Proficiently scrub in at least three specialty areas, including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics, is highly preferred.
• Establish and maintain a sterile environment, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as directed.
• Utilize the physician preference card as a foundational reference when preparing cases and setting up the Operating Room.
• Ensure that preference cards are consistently updated and comprehensive.
• Collaborate effectively as part of the surgical team to provide optimal patient care.
• Participate in team planning and execution.
• Maintain a safe environment by implementing technical and aseptic practices at all times.
• Demonstrate clinical proficiency in the handling and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Adhere to Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff in all care situations.
• Exhibit competence in monitoring and controlling the surgical environment, ensuring proper traffic control, dress codes, and compliance with sanitation policies and procedures.
• Familiarize oneself with facility policies regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of all instruments and supplies.
• Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of each patient.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience is preferred.
- BLS certification is required.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or possess an LVN/LPN License.
