Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Fish Culture Specialist to join our team at the State of Vermont. As a key member of our aquatic life management team, you will be responsible for the propagation and culture of food and game fish, ensuring the health and well-being of our aquatic resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer feed to fish using techniques appropriate to a determined regimen, observing and reporting any problems with feed utilization or acceptance.
  • Assist in the calculation of appropriate feeding regimens and participate in data collection on fish development.
  • Clean and maintain fish rearing tanks and raceways, monitoring changes in level or quality of water supplies and making adjustments as needed.
  • Load, transport, and stock fish as assigned, ensuring that conditions at stocking points are adequate for fish survival.
  • Observe fish to identify behavioral abnormalities or possible health problems, reporting to higher level personnel and assisting in investigation and development of responses.
  • Administer chemical treatments as prescribed and under supervision.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance and repair of facility equipment.
  • Assist in public outreach efforts and perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fish culture or a natural resources field, or one year or more experience in the propagation and culture of food or game fish.
  • Working knowledge of fish culture principles and practices, as well as species and strains of fish reared at the assigned facility.
  • Ability to feed fish in an appropriate manner and amounts, perform water quality and other environmental monitoring, and participate in data collection on fish development.
  • Ability to evaluate fish behavioral abnormalities and determine the urgency of responses, as well as operate and safely use hand and power tools for maintenance and repair.
  • Awareness of diseases and stress factors that may adversely affect fish being cultured.
