Accounting Specialist

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bookkeeper to join our team at Gwinnett County Public Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and providing financial support to school administrators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain all financial transactions in the local school accounting software in accordance with GCPS Policy and Procedures, the Local School Accounting Manual, and general accounting principles.
- Serve as the primary support for the principal regarding financial matters, including assisting with the annual school budget process and communicating areas of concern regarding school financials.
- Verify and deposit all local school funds in a timely manner, including reviewing and processing receipts into the appropriate account, preparing deposits, and serving as the primary contact for scheduled pickup of deposits by armored car service.
- Manage local school disbursements, including reviewing local check requests for proper documentation and availability of funds, processing approved vendor invoices for payment, and serving as the school purchasing card manager.
- Oversee local school online payment activities, including serving as the primary contact for all online student activity payments, reconciling and posting all electronic deposits to the local school accounting software, and preparing and submitting purchasing/travel card monthly reports and documentation.
- Prepare all monthly financial reports and analysis as required in GCPS Policy and Procedure, process reports for principal review and submission to Financial Operations Department, and distribute monthly reports for review by club sponsors, department chairs, athletic directors, and community school directors.
- Facilitate data gathering and serve as liaison for annual audit, communicate accounting processes to school staff, and oversee electronic ordering of supplies and materials for local school as requested.
- Organize and maintain files for all school funds as specified in the Local School Accounting Manual, participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency as related to job assignment, and interact effectively with staff members and administrators.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent with emphasis on business education required; additional post-secondary education in a related field preferred.
- Three years of accounting/bookkeeping experience required; experience with PeopleSoft or another Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software system preferred.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial reports, ability to prepare reports and business correspondence, ability to solve practical problems, ability to work independently, strong organizational skills, and strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and various integrated applications.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is also required to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
