WSP is seeking a Project Accounting Consultant who can operate from any of its regional offices on the west coast.
As an experienced project accounting professional, you will provide essential financial and accounting support to Project Managers and their teams. Your responsibilities will encompass reviewing project charges for precision, executing cost transfers, updating funding as necessary, maintaining project budgets, and ensuring that all project data is up-to-date for projects of medium size and moderate complexity. You will generate detailed financial documentation and reports related to infrastructure, transportation, and professional services projects, collaborating closely with project managers on pre-billing information, cost estimates, and invoicing. Your role is crucial in ensuring that all responsibilities are executed with a quality level that meets or exceeds industry standards, thereby supporting the delivery of innovative solutions to clients.
Your Responsibilities
- Manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenues for assigned projects, ensuring accurate profit and loss calculations, and communicating financial performance to project management.
- Oversee the lifecycle of project accounting, from creating project accounts in Oracle to tracking budgets, validating invoices, closing projects, and reconciling payables and receivables.
- Perform comprehensive accounting tasks related to managing project contracts, billing events, and exceptions for medium-sized and moderately complex projects.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and teams to establish and update project budgets, providing accounting recommendations as contract modifications or budget changes occur.
- Generate and evaluate project financial reports, identifying any issues that require escalation to the Project Manager.
- Authorize access to project accounts and manage the transfer of expenses in compliance with established accounting practices.
- Maintain quality control standards for generating accurate project-related financial records using Oracle and spreadsheets.
- Apply accounting expertise to project resources, labor, and expenses, investigating variances and submitting reports to management.
- Verify contract and change order details for medium-sized and moderately complex projects, interpreting contract language and terms.
- Monitor key indicators for managing problem projects, keeping project managers informed of any concerns.
- Ensure draft invoices are accurate according to contract requirements, obtaining necessary approvals before submission to clients.
- Manage subcontractor coordination, including evaluating invoices for accuracy and maintaining purchase orders.
- Identify and follow up on unpaid contract billings and delinquent accounts receivable.
- Respond to client requests for detailed project expense information and review all project-related billings.
- Participate in project meetings to discuss the status of project financials and address any identified issues.
- Create and submit government reports related to projects.
- Compile information for review by senior consultants prior to submission for audits.
- Engage with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
- Stay updated on the latest project accounting principles and practices.
- Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in accounting and project contracts.
- Working knowledge of project accounting principles and their application.
- Analytical mindset with sound judgment in financial decision-making.
- Ability to coordinate efforts with various stakeholders regarding project requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency in technical writing and accounting software, particularly MS Excel.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze data and reach logical conclusions.
- Awareness of WSP USA's Project Delivery Handbook.
- Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies.
- Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
- Familiarity with Oracle is preferred but not mandatory.
