Job Overview

Position Summary:

The role involves performing Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on various materials including Carbon Steel and HY-80/100, as well as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GTAW) for Stainless Steel and Aluminum. Proficiency in Manual Torch Silver-brazing for Grade III and Grade V is also required.

Key Responsibilities:

The individual will be accountable for welding metal components using diverse welding techniques and positions within a ship repair setting. The position demands expertise in multiple welding methods, including Oxyacetylene, Metallic Arc, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding. Tasks will encompass both fillet and butt welding. **Refer to Welding Chart for specifics


• 1st Class – Must possess qualifications for SMAW on Carbon Steel Plate; FCAW on Carbon Steel Plate; GMAW on Aluminum Plate; (All positions – Overhead, Vertical & Horizontal); 6G on Carbon Steel Pipe & 6G on Stainless Steel Pipe; 6GR (restricted Plate) is advantageous.

Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:

Position Type and Work Hours:

This is a full-time role. Workdays and hours may vary, potentially including weekends and nights. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is essential for performing the job's fundamental functions.

Travel Requirements:

Travel is primarily local during business hours, with occasional out-of-area and overnight travel expected.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Completion of an apprenticeship or trade school
  3. Master Class – 7+ years of experience in the trade; 1st Class – 5+ years; 2nd Class – 3+ years; 3rd Class – 1+ years.
  4. Documented marine or industrial experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education that aligns with job-related requirements and business necessity.


• Must provide personal hand tools as specified by trade specialty.

Additional Qualifications:


• Must be available to work all assigned shifts as production needs dictate.


• Must be capable of reading, interpreting, and utilizing blueprints.


• Must be adept at using various tools and measuring devices during the welding process.


• This role is situated in an industrial environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor, and diverse weather conditions typical of a shipyard.


• Must successfully pass a Physical Agility Test.


• Must be qualified to wear a respirator.
