JOB TITLE: Operating Room Nurse

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The provision of patient care through the nursing process framework (evaluation, diagnosis, and patient outcomes) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical patients.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Clinical Services Supervisor

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program
• Valid Registered Nurse License
• Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Exhibits comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in alignment with recognized nursing standards and departmental policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and regulatory standards.
• Evaluates the physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
• Conducts pain assessments in accordance with established policies.
• Completes thorough patient histories.
• Communicates relevant information to appropriate personnel to ensure continuity of care.
• Accurately documents patient information in medical records, signing with the appropriate professional title.
• Assesses patient understanding and expectations regarding care.
• Identifies desired patient outcomes.
• Establishes nursing diagnoses.
• Sets mutually acceptable goals with patients and families.
• Develops individualized Plans of Care.
• Implements nursing care plans tailored to the needs of patients and families.
• Demonstrates problem-solving and assessment capabilities.
• Responds effectively to emergencies.
• Operates within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA Code of Ethics, and organizational policies).
• Performs nursing actions that reflect accountability and sound judgment.
• Continuously adjusts care plans based on patient and family data.
• Demonstrates effective preoperative communication and reporting.
• Ensures proper procedure and documentation for surgical case counting.
• Maintains aseptic technique.
• Achieves efficient turnover times.
• Executes proper techniques for obtaining blood products.
• Verifies patient identification in accordance with policy.
• Ensures correct surgical site identification and marking as per policy.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during procedures.
• Engages in professional nursing organizations.
