DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) department is responsible for managing all university activities related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, and maintenance operations. The main campus spans over 2,000 acres and features more than 500 buildings, totaling over 8 million square feet. The department operates with a budget exceeding $54 million and manages a project portfolio around $950 million, employing over 370 full-time staff members to fulfill its operational duties.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the guidance of the Grounds Superintendent, the Tree Trimmer is tasked with executing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities related to tree maintenance, necessitating safe work practices at significant heights. Responsibilities include implementing pruning techniques and maintenance activities aimed at minimizing tree hazards, enhancing tree health, and preserving the aesthetic and functional value of campus trees. The role involves climbing trees using appropriate safety equipment in accordance with ANSI Z133 Safety Standards for Tree Care Operations, as well as operating a bucket truck for elevated tasks. Tree pruning and removal will require proficiency in rigging techniques, along with ground support activities. Work may occur over pathways or structures, necessitating brush chipping, cleanup, and general tool upkeep.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary: $28.19/hour, with compensation based on skills, qualifications, and experience.

SCHEDULE DETAILS
- Full-time, Fixed

80% - Tree Maintenance
- Utilize proper pruning techniques to enhance tree structure, mitigate hazards, remove deadwood, and ensure clearance for buildings, roads, and pathways.
- Provide training for young trees.
- Execute crown cleaning, thinning, and reduction by lowering branches and limbs using load lines and tag lines.
- Implement tree management practices, including the installation of support cables or rods for weak limbs.
- Safely perform tree removals through topping, piecing out, or felling techniques.
- Identify and report hazardous trees within the landscape.
- Operate hand and power tools, climbing and rigging equipment, traffic safety gear, lift trucks, and chippers.
- Access trees and achieve working height through climbing techniques and boom truck usage.
- Respond to tree-related emergencies as needed.
- Maintain and service saws, lubricate aerial lifts and chippers, change chipper blades, and keep equipment in optimal condition.
- Regularly inspect climbing and rigging equipment, reporting any deficiencies.
- Document time, tree work, and equipment maintenance using departmental software and systems.
- Proven experience and proficiency in modern tree climbing and rigging techniques.
- Skills in tree pruning and removal at significant heights, including crown restoration and hazard mitigation.
- Ability to safely operate necessary equipment such as chainsaws and climbing gear.
- Knowledge of tree biology and growth patterns, with the ability to make informed pruning decisions.
- Experience in performing routine maintenance on tree care equipment.
- Familiarity with basic computer applications for documentation and communication.
- Certification as an arborist or educational background in arboriculture or horticulture.
- Ability to diagnose and treat tree health issues effectively.
- Understanding of soil and water relationships affecting plant health.
