Job Summary

The City of Fort Wayne is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to assist with the maintenance of the Botanical Conservatory facilities and grounds. As a Seasonal Maintenance Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the Conservatory remains a beautiful and safe space for visitors to enjoy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facility Maintenance: Assist with janitorial maintenance, including facility and restroom cleaning, to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
  • Event Support: Set up and tear down tables and chairs according to drawings and/or verbal instruction to support events and exhibitions.
  • Chemical Handling: Responsibly and effectively use chemical agents such as cleaning products to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Assist with snow removal and/or pick up litter or debris using safe handling procedures to maintain the Conservatory grounds.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Plant Care: May occasionally assist with providing basic plant care to ensure the health and well-being of the Conservatory's plant collection.
Performance Expectations

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided by management. If at any time the incumbent is unsure of their role or specific responsibilities, it is their responsibility to refer to their job description and ask for clarification from their supervisor.

Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: At least 18 years of age and completion of three years of high school, and any combination of related work experiences such as cleaning, catering, or equipment set-up.
  • Skills and Abilities: Operates and maintains equipment in a safe manner, works with moderate supervision, maintains good relations with park patrons, and communicates effectively both orally and written.
Language Skills

The successful candidate will be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. They will also be able to write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

The successful candidate will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. They will also be able to compute rate, ration, and percent, and draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out simple, repetitive, routine tasks, and have practical knowledge of the use of small hand tools and power tools. They will also be able to follow simple oral instructions and understand the general work required in the maintenance of all Conservatory areas.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License: Required for the safe operation of City vehicles.
