Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries is seeking enthusiastic Interns to engage as members of our Academic Engagement and Departmental Libraries teams. Interns will receive mentorship from a dynamic and experienced team of professional librarians, providing an excellent opportunity to launch their careers in information services. These interns will be stationed at the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center Information Desk, where they will offer basic reference assistance, research referrals, and informational and directional support. Additionally, interns will have the chance to enhance their skills by participating in projects that may include systematic reviews, outreach programming, exhibits, research impact assessment, and collections analysis. Interns will also contribute to the Libraries' chat and email reference services and may serve at various departmental libraries. This position is designed for a duration of 12 months, with interns working up to 20 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends.

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Providing assistance at the Van Pelt Dietrich Information Desk, including reference and directional support, and directing patrons to staff for further help.
  • Managing chat services and responding to reference tickets.
  • Supporting various services at departmental libraries, such as systematic reviews, outreach programming, circulation desk duties, social media engagement, exhibits, research impact assessment, collections analysis, and instructional sessions.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Current graduate student in an ALA accredited library or information science program or another graduate studies program.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong service orientation and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt quickly, and work autonomously.
  • Interest in exploring various fields, including health sciences, anthropology, archaeology, arts, design, or architecture.
  • Commitment to working in libraries and supporting a diverse academic community.
  • Flexibility regarding work location.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work onsite in library facilities.
  • Availability to work some evenings and/or weekends.
This is a 1-year term position.
