Job Summary

The Staff Pharmacist II at North Mississippi Health Services is a multifaceted position focused on clinical care, education, operations, research, and regulatory compliance. This position involves coordinating patient care across various healthcare settings, providing medication education, conducting research, and maintaining compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical:
    • Assists in coordinating and providing care to patients across the continuum of care, in conjunction with other healthcare professionals.
    • Serves as a resource person to support pharmacy personnel and other healthcare professionals in designated areas.
    • Assists in designing and coordinating clinical pharmacy services.
    • Assists in training pharmacy staff.
    • Monitors and manages drug therapy in designated patient populations.
    • Develops care plans/guidelines to include drug, devices, and delivery modalities.
  • Education:
    • Provides pharmacotherapy education.
    • Assists in programs to meet the needs of the pharmacy and other healthcare professionals.
    • Develops objectives for and facilitates student/resident training.
    • Provides medication use education to patients, family members, community, etc.
    • Participates and assists in educational programs that focus on disease prevention and wellness promotion.
    • Participates in departmental performance improvement programs.
    • Maintains CE (Continuous Education) hours as required.
  • Operations:
    • Assists in prevention, detection, and resolution of medicine abuse.
    • Working knowledge of pharmacy and medical claims systems.
    • Understanding of retail and hospital outpatient operations.
    • Working knowledge of billing and reimbursement procedures (ICD-9/HCPC/CPT Coding, OPPS reimbursement, Medicare, etc).
    • Verifies patient health insurance benefits and precertification's for Third Party Payors.
  • Financial/Budget:
    • Compares, evaluates, and assesses drug therapy treatment regimes and drug delivery in designated practice areas.
    • Assists in compliance of departmental budget.
    • Participates in on-going revision of system-wide formulary.
  • Reporting/Recordkeeping:
    • Maintains service activities and outcomes reports for designated practice area(s).
    • Provides reports in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Research:
    • Coordinates, conducts, and participates in pharmacology research/development in cooperation with other healthcare professionals.
  • Regulatory:
    • Ensures departmental compliance with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements.
    • Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies, Procedures/Guidelines.
Requirements
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's Degree
    • Graduate of an accredited school of Pharmacy
    • PhD
    • Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD)
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Licensed as a Pharmacist by the State Board of Pharmacy in the state based on facility location
  • Work Experience:
    • 4-6 years
    • Minimum of 3 years experience in comparable health system pharmacy
    • American Society of Health Systems Pharmacy Residency (ASHP) or 3 years clinical practice experience (clinical)
    • American Society of Health Systems Pharmacy Residency (ASHP) or 3 years operational experience (operational)
    • Previous patient care or equivalent previous experience with demonstrated proficiency in clinical areas needed to enhance pharmaceutical care
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication required
    • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple clinical or operational areas; required
    • Knowledge and skill across broad populations or specialized populations; required
    • Interaction with a patient population of all ages ranging from infants to geriatrics, required
    • Stays abreast of the pharmacotherapy literature
    • Enhances pharmacotherapeutic management of patients
    • Establishes new drug standards
    • Shows good clinical judgment
    • Ability to work independently
    • Improves patient quality outcome measures
    • Assists in the reduction of overall healthcare costs
    • Provide preceptorship to students and residents as designated
    • Must have extensive contact with: patients, visitors, physicians, pharmacy team members, and departmental professionals
    • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Must reflect a positive, caring attitude toward clients, patients, staff, and the public we serve
