About the Role:
The Veterinary Surgical Technician position is responsible for executing all facets of surgical services within the Vivarium. This encompasses pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for animal subjects involved in survival or acute studies, as well as preparing animals for diverse surgical interventions.

This role demands proficiency in conducting advanced or novel surgical techniques and collaborating closely with research personnel. It includes support for multiple laboratory animal species, primarily focusing on rodents. The emphasis is on upholding the highest standards of animal welfare while contributing to research in a collaborative and dynamic team setting.


About the Department:
The Surgery Team is dedicated to enhancing scientific endeavors by offering a centralized surgical service for HHMI researchers. This position will cater to various research animal species and provide essential technical support for fundamental scientific investigations, potentially influencing research goals valued at significant financial amounts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform multi-species surgical or technical support and advanced surgical procedures, with or without oversight from a Surgical Subject Matter Expert, Researcher, or Veterinarian.
  • Develop and coordinate specialized surgical procedures tailored to laboratory or project requirements, under the guidance of the Surgery Supervisor.
  • Configure and troubleshoot specialized surgical equipment related to Vivarium-led projects.
  • Support laboratories with IACUC protocol design and development, demonstrating a high level of independence.
  • Assist in drafting new surgical protocols with guidance from the Surgery Supervisor.
  • Conduct literature reviews to identify optimal surgical models and techniques for research initiatives.
  • Prepare and present information on laboratory and Vivarium-led projects to internal teams and external conferences.
  • Lead process improvements and standardization of surgical practices within the program.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the Surgical Training Program in collaboration with the Training Team.
  • Provide training and guidance to peers and researchers on routine and specialized tasks, including the use of surgical equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with researchers regarding surgical requests, procedures, and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences or a related field is required (Master's preferred).
  • LATG certification with AALAS is mandatory.
  • SRA, SRT, or SRS certifications are preferred.
  • LVT, CVT, or RVT credentials are advantageous.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience with vertebrate animal species, including at least six years performing micro-surgical procedures in a research context.
  • Experience in a basic or applied science research environment is essential, whether in academia, industry, or non-profit sectors.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Physical Requirements:

The following are the minimum physical requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, move between areas, and reach with arms and hands.
  • Occasionally lift, move, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally stoop and bend.
  • Regularly required to type at a computer.

Work is conducted in a research animal facility where personnel may encounter various laboratory animal species and associated conditions.

Personnel may be exposed to wet, above-average temperatures, and/or humid conditions, as well as fumes, airborne particles, and biohazard materials.

The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate, with occasional high levels.
