Job Title: Fire Inspector

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Inspector to join our team at Coastal Carolina University. As a Fire Inspector, you will be responsible for conducting regular inspections of facilities, fire and life safety equipment, and systems to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities, fire and life safety equipment, and systems to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations.
  • Determine corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Explain these measures to facility representatives.
  • Produce detailed reports of fire inspections performed, fire code violations observed, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Inspect and test fire protection and/or fire suppression systems, fire extinguishers, and AEDs to verify that such systems are installed in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
  • Coordinate with fire safety vendors for approved repairs of fire and life safety equipment and systems.
  • Respond to fire alarm activations and fire-related incidents on campus.
  • Serve as a liaison with responding authorities having jurisdiction and provide logistical support in returning campus to normal operations.
  • Serve as an alternate emergency operations center representative for Emergency Support Function-4, staffing the CCU Emergency Operations center, when necessary.
  • Assist with the regular conduct of residential facilities fire exit drills, monitor and evaluate evacuation procedures.
  • Assist with fire prevention education activities and initiatives for campus staff, faculty, and students.
  • Assist the CCU Fire Marshal with acceptance tests and inspections of newly installed fire protection systems according to applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Assist campus stakeholders with special event planning for the safe and appropriate use of fire/combustibles and applicable permitting of vendor-provided mechanical devices.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) and minimum of five (5) years experience as a fire inspector or related field.
  • Must possess a valid SC driver's license.
  • Must be a certified International Code Council Fire Inspector 1 or successfully obtain the ICC Fire Inspector 1 certification within 12 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector 1 Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Possess generalized working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Generalized education in firefighting at the minimum level of Fire Fighter 1.
  • Knowledge of fire alarms, fire suppression systems, and the International Fire Code.
  • Microsoft Office and other inspection software reports.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Works irregular hours.
  • Wears university-provided uniform.
  • Works indoors and outdoors in hot and humid conditions.
