Position Overview:
This role offers the chance to join a dynamic team of mechanics and vehicle detailers in a fast-paced environment. Our primary objective is to support Cornell's mission by ensuring that the fleet of rental vehicles and motorcoaches is maintained to the highest safety and cleanliness standards. We prioritize safety for both our team and the vehicles we manage.
The team is responsible for the maintenance (in compliance with DOT regulations) and cleaning of our Campus-to-Campus motorcoach service, which connects various campuses. Additionally, the team oversees the upkeep of a busy rental fleet. Daily responsibilities include collaborating on priority projects, maintaining accurate records of labor and materials, and delivering exceptional service to our customers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational skills, the ability to work with multiple stakeholders, and a commitment to advancing projects efficiently and professionally. As a member of the vehicle maintenance team, you will perform a variety of mechanical services, including routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative care on a range of vehicles (buses, motor coaches, trucks, vans, and cars). You will also engage in both major and minor repairs on various engine types, including gas, alternative fuels, and diesel engines. Collaboration with the Fleet Manager on complex maintenance tasks will be a key aspect of your role.
This position is part of a unionized workforce represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW), with a competitive hourly wage.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of experience in vehicle maintenance, with specific expertise in air brakes and hydraulic systems.
- A valid driver's license is required; you may need to operate a vehicle to travel to job sites.
- Possession of a commercial driver's license with air brake and passenger endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire.
- Possession of a NYS vehicle inspector's license or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire.
- Compliance with New York State Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
- Familiarity with NYS DOT rules and record-keeping requirements.
- Experience with tools necessary for automotive maintenance and repair.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Effective time management and conscientious work ethic.
- Good judgment regarding vehicle repairs and safety.
- Proficiency in computer use and willingness to learn new software.
- Flexibility to accept occasional overtime assignments.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test and compliance with random drug and alcohol testing policies.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, to ensure vehicle readiness.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Physical capability to stand, bend, and climb ladders as required.
- Graduation from an accredited automotive or diesel technology program.
- An associate degree in automotive or diesel technology.
- Experience with the maintenance of buses and motor coaches.
