Job Overview

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

The role involves executing the responsibilities of the Sheriff's office by providing assistance in civil, criminal, and public service law enforcement, acting under the direct supervision of the Sheriff or Chief Deputy Sheriff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure the safety, physical security, and orderly behavior of all individuals in and around the Courthouse.
  2. Maintain security checkpoints at the County courthouse.
  3. Transport and supervise prisoners; ensure that prisoners are always under control; utilize restraining devices when necessary.
  4. Serve bench warrants, writs, executions, summons, court orders, and subpoenas.
  5. Conduct background investigations; verify the accuracy of information and document all findings.
  6. Prepare and submit incident reports as required.
  7. Execute personal property seizures; serve documents and manage all related notices and paperwork.
  8. Collect payments from judgments in civil cases and Bench Warrants.
  9. Engage with prisoners, County departments, the general public, and others as needed to fulfill essential job functions.
  10. Assist in maintaining law and order during strikes, riots, and/or emergencies.
  11. Utilize equipment such as radios, batons, weapons, computers, and vehicles as necessary to perform essential job functions.
  12. Travel frequently for prisoner transport or to perform other essential duties.
  13. Enforce criminal and vehicle code statutes of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  1. Participate in training, meetings, and seminars as required.
  2. Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

SUPERVISION:

Receives occasional guidance and minimal supervision from the Sheriff/Chief Deputy regarding daily responsibilities.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  1. Work indoors in a suitable workspace with adequate lighting, ventilation, and temperature.
  2. Experience average exposure to stress and noise, but subject to frequent interruptions.
  3. Normal indoor exposure to dust and dirt.
  4. Frequent travel required in all seasons.
  5. Work in conditions that may involve potential outbursts of disruptive behavior from clients or consumers.
  6. May require working beyond normal hours or being on-call as needed.
  7. Work outdoors in various weather conditions.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to record, convey, and present information, explain procedures, and follow instructions.
  2. Must be able to stand, walk, and drive frequently during the workday, with occasional sitting, twisting, bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching as necessary to fulfill essential job functions.
  3. Requires coordinated dexterity of fingers/hands; arms/legs/torso as necessary to perform job duties.
  4. Must be able to react quickly both physically and mentally in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak.
  5. Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday.
  6. Must be able to work with clients who may carry infectious diseases.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with some knowledge in law enforcement or a related field preferred. A valid Pennsylvania driver's license is required. Current PA Act 120 Certification, Act 2 Sheriff's Academy, or retired Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) within the last five years is preferred.

  1. WORK EXPERIENCE:

No prior experience required; however, experience in law enforcement or a legal environment is preferred.

  1. PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants without prior Act 120 or Act 2 certification must meet the certification requirements set forth by the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Education and Training Board Physical Fitness Standards established by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must not appear on Preclusion Lists as defined by Pennsylvania's Medical Assistance Bulletin Provider Screening of Employees and Contractors for Exclusion from Participating in Federal Healthcare Programs.
  • Must collaborate with the employer to apply for necessary clearances prior to employment. All clearances must reflect acceptable results and be renewed every four years.
  • Must satisfactorily complete pre-employment psychological testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Must be able to communicate effectively in English and carry out essential job duties.
  2. Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Ability to work independently, exhibit flexibility, and collaborate effectively with the general public, prisoners, staff, and others.
  4. Maintain confidentiality regarding client information and records.
  5. Technical proficiency in operating personal computers, typewriters, and other office equipment with accuracy and speed.
  6. Willingness to travel and transport prisoners as needed.
  7. Ability to manage and safely control aggressive individuals.
  8. General knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and procedures, and the ability to apply them to job duties.
  9. Demonstrate initiative, discretion, and decision-making skills when necessary.
  10. Ability to coordinate various duties and collaborate effectively with other departments.
  11. Ability to use firearms and make appropriate arrests when necessary.
  12. Must qualify annually in firearms proficiency in accordance with Sheriff's office policies and procedures.
