GENERAL JOB OVERVIEW:
This role entails overseeing all primary laboratory functions (mechanical, chemical, process/environmental) to meet customer and environmental standards, NAS quality benchmarks, and product certifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating and establishing standard testing protocols as required by NAS for customer and environmental compliance, as well as product certification and internal quality assurance processes.
  • Creating and managing product sample collection and testing methodologies to ensure in-process product quality and adherence to customer specifications. This includes organizing and defining performance metrics for all laboratory activities, necessitating prompt analysis and communication of results to operational teams.
  • Supervising all product testing conducted by NAS to ensure compliance with customer specifications and quality standards. This includes testing and certifying that spare parts and supplies procured by NAS meet company quality criteria.
  • Formulating testing methodologies for operational processes (including acid solution analysis and steady solution testing). Providing training to technicians and operators on the use of equipment to enhance quality and productivity.
  • Developing and enforcing a laboratory safety and chemical handling manual to mitigate injuries/accidents, enhance working conditions, and reduce operational costs.
  • Training and implementing laboratory quality protocols to achieve laboratory accreditation, customer satisfaction, and credibility, while minimizing reliance on external testing services. Ensuring all testing procedures comply with OSHA, EPA, ASTM, MIN STD, and ASME standards.
  • Implementing safety protocols to prevent injuries/accidents, improve workplace conditions, and lower costs.
  • Facilitating cross-training for laboratory personnel to ensure that all mechanical and chemical lab staff are proficient in NAS procedures. Ensuring ongoing training on new equipment or techniques.
  • Overseeing all laboratory technicians, team leaders, and group leaders. Instructing staff on job expectations, company policies, and practices. Ensuring compliance with established company rules regarding attendance, performance, training, and safety.
  • Assisting in the training and implementation of laboratory quality procedures.
  • Conducting regular performance evaluations for the MEL Group Leader.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Addressing equipment malfunctions and issues through the AS400 work order system and direct communication with the maintenance department.
  • Reviewing outputs and results from the mechanical lab.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the lab supervisor or technical manager.
  • Participating in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Promoting safety and conducting routine safety assessments and area evaluations, taking corrective actions as necessary.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of a B.S. Degree in Metallurgical/Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Mobility within the plant environment.
  • Regularly required to stand for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling and reaching.
  • Visual acuity with or without correction.
  • Effective communication skills.

HEALTH AND SAFETY:
  • Adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations.
  • Following company safety protocols.
  • Reporting any deficiencies in protective equipment or clothing to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
  • Utilizing required safety equipment and protective devices as necessary for job duties.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Maintaining clean, well-ventilated, and safe work areas.

RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports directly to the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Has authority over all Laboratory Technicians, Leaders, and Group Leaders.
  • Maintains communication with various departments, particularly with Operations Managers and Quality Engineers/Supervisors.
  • Engages with external entities such as Independent Labs, Contractors, and EPA personnel regarding testing methodologies and equipment calibration.
