Graves Protection and Repatriation Specialist

The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Historic Resources is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Coordinator. This critical role requires strong knowledge and experience in implementing NAGPRA provisions, working closely with the DHR NAGPRA Task Force to develop and implement policies and procedures for timely and respectful repatriation of Native American ancestors and cultural items.
Key responsibilities include representing DHR as the primary contact for the NAGPRA program, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and collaborating with members of the NAGPRA Task Force to achieve agency goals. The ideal candidate will possess excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to research, interpret, and apply state and agency policies accurately. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills are also essential.
To be successful in this position, candidates should have experience with documentation, disposition, and repatriation of ancestral remains and NAGPRA-eligible associated funerary objects, unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, or objects of cultural patrimony. A Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural/Heritage Resource Management, Native American Studies, or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of Virginia Indigenous archaeology and Tribal history is also desirable.
