Position Overview

Allan Hancock College is seeking a dedicated and innovative individual to join our Social and Behavior Sciences department as a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty member. The successful candidate will be committed to providing high-quality education to a diverse student body, focusing on fostering an inclusive, supportive, and academically challenging learning environment.

This position involves teaching various psychology courses, both in-person and online, and contributing as an active member of the department and the college. The assignment may include teaching at off-campus centers and/or evening classes as well as distance education/online classes.

Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in northern Santa Barbara County. The college is ranked as one of the five best community colleges in California and one of the top 120 community colleges in the nation. Approximately 11,500 credit students enroll each semester at one of the college's four locations in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley, or at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching a variety of psychology courses, which may include General Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, Human Sexuality, Child Psychology, Human Development, Abnormal Psychology, Research Methods, and more.
  • Developing and delivering course materials, syllabi, and assessments that align with departmental standards and the college's educational mission.
  • Utilizing effective teaching strategies and the college's course management system to engage students and enhance learning and program outcomes.
  • Providing academic mentorship to students, helping them to achieve their educational and career goals.
  • Participating in curriculum development, program review, and assessment activities.
  • Engaging in professional development opportunities and remaining current in the field of psychology.
  • Collaborating with department colleagues and participating in the college's participatory governance structure.
  • Fostering an inclusive classroom environment that respects and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Supporting students' academic and personal growth through office hours, academic support services, and campus resources.
  • Participating in outreach and contributing to the college's mission to serve the local community.
Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and/or experience in:

  • Teaching strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of learning styles, skills, motivation, and education both in the classroom and online.
  • The overall field of psychology as evidenced by undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  • Teaching lower-division college-level psychology courses.
Requirements

The minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • A Master's degree in psychology.
  • OR a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a Master's degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work.
  • OR the equivalent as outlined in Board Policy 7211.
