Job Summary

ChristianaCare is seeking a highly skilled Physician Clinical Ethicist to lead our clinical ethics services. As a key member of our team, you will provide education, information, consultation, policy review, and support to clinicians, physicians, and other providers, as well as patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and ethics expertise to manage the activities of Clinical Ethics services.
  • Offer ethical expertise and counsel to ChristianaCare Health System on moral frameworks, analysis, ethical decision-making, organizational ethics, and dispute resolution.
  • Collaborate on the development and implementation of mechanisms to address ethical issues that arise from an institutional perspective and meet the requirements of regulatory and/or accrediting bodies.
  • Monitor and coordinate ethics programs and work, evaluating performance and quality.
  • Serve as a representative and professional staff for the ChristianaCare Health System Ethics Committee and co-chair the committee.
  • Lead the Ethics Consultation Service, conducting clinical ethics consultations and mentoring others to do the same.
  • Facilitate the Ethics Screeners on-call, serve as a resource to this team, including training and education, and participate in the on-call rotation.
  • Assess and suggest ways to improve the quality of consultation.
  • Conduct clinical ethics rounds in ChristianaCare's Intensive Care Units as needed/requested.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies with ethical components.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate ethics education programs for providers, staff, patients, families, and members of the community.
  • Develop community educational opportunities and outreach programs.
  • Partner with the Care for the Caregiver Program to provide support to clinicians experiencing moral distress.
  • Review and report consultation data to the Ethics Committee and senior leaders on a regular basis.
  • Remain current with public ethical issues/changes/challenges to inform local decision-making.
  • Participate in research to develop new knowledge and lead change.
  • Act as a community resource to assist in building clinical ethics programs.
  • Develop and maintain the Ethics Committee collaboration website.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
Requirements
  • Medical Doctorate Degree (M.D. or D.O.) required, along with board certification in the respective specialty.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in Delaware.
  • 5+ years of previous clinical experience involving direct patient care as a practicing Physician (MD/DO) required.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical ethics issues and concepts, ethics-related health law, and advanced skill in building ethical consensus required.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams required.
  • Master's degree in clinical/biomedical ethics preferred.
  • 1+ year of previous experience conducting clinical ethics consults in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Leadership and teaching experience preferred.
