Principal Substation Engineer

Job Summary

The successful candidate will provide engineering support for the design of substation facilities for voltages up to and including 765 kV for our client and its customers as an integral part of the Power Networks team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Substation physical design, including overall engineering and analysis for new switchyards and substations, additions, and modifications
  • Preparation of specifications and procurement support
  • Preparation of engineering drawings, including layout and general arrangements for all major equipment and structures required for high-voltage switchyards or substations
  • Perform auxiliary electrical power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, protection, and coordination, ampacity, and battery sizing studies
  • Perform substation grounding calculations and studies, lightning protection, and insulation coordination, lighting, bus calculations, transformer and bus sizing calculations, fault calculations, and AC and DC auxiliary system sizing calculations
  • Proposal preparation, proposal estimates, and input to scope documents and client presentations
  • Responsible for the quality assurance of documents to applicable client standards
  • Supervise and coordinate other engineers of equal and lesser experience to successfully deliver a project
  • Provide technical direction to subordinate team members
  • Complete tasks in accordance with project procedures, applicable codes, and/or standards, on schedule, and within budget
  • Discuss technical problems and communicate effectively with other project personnel and outside customers
  • Perform the function of a team leader capable of solving complex issues and act as a lead engineer responsible for the quality of deliverables
  • Interface with other departmental staff, project management, and with outside customers
  • Ability to travel to job sites to perform site walkdowns
Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience in substation engineering
  • Highly effective technical and practical engineering skills and ability to consistently deliver quality, accurate, and timely work to Worley and its customers
  • Sound knowledge of fundamental requirements of electrical engineering and basic requirements of other engineering fields
  • Sound knowledge of applicable local and international standards and statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Competent use of electrical engineering-specific software
  • Competent use of relevant software, such as MS Office Suite
  • Substantial technical and practical experience in electrical engineering in the same or similar industry, including experience in working in multi-disciplinary projects and teams
  • Experience working in project leadership roles
  • Experience in estimating project costs and writing proposal content
  • Ideal candidate should have strong interpersonal and written communication skills that permit working efficiently alongside other senior substation engineers and designers in a team setting
  • 4 or 5-year Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States preferred
