POSITION SUMMARY:

The custodian plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of the building and its facilities, contributing to a learning environment that enhances the health, attitude, and pride of students.

In addition to standard maintenance duties, the custodian provides direct assistance to classroom educators in the arrangement and upkeep of furniture and equipment.

The custodian also exemplifies professionalism, courtesy, and helpfulness, serving as a role model for students.

Additionally, the custodian aids in building security as needed and collaborates closely with the building administrator during various activities.


COMPENSATION:
Initial wage placement will align with the NCSD/OSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The district covers the employer portion, while there is also a mandatory employee contribution.

Upon meeting eligibility criteria, defined as working at least six full calendar months in a qualifying position, employees must contribute 6% via payroll deduction.

Part-time employees who work at least six months and 600 hours in a calendar year will qualify.

SCHEDULE:
2:00 pm to 10:30 pm; subject to change based on departmental needs.

WORK CALENDAR:
260 days

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have proven experience working with culturally diverse families and communities or demonstrate a commitment to enhancing engagement with diverse populations and effective communication skills.

Graduation from high school or equivalent, or at least two years of custodial experience may substitute for the educational requirement.

Training in first aid/CPR and defibrillator use may be required. Candidates must possess the ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with all district employees, vendors, contractors, and public entities.

Ability to work efficiently in an environment with frequent interruptions, requiring concentration and consistent accuracy while adapting to changing priorities is essential.

Initiative and the capacity to work with minimal supervision, along with sound judgment and decision-making skills, are crucial. Knowledge of state and local codes related to the assigned trade/craft is necessary.

Physical ability to use ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts, and district vehicles, as well as the capacity to stand, lift, and walk for most of the workday, is required. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.



DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual and bicultural skills are preferred. Experience and knowledge of intrusion alarms, automatic fire alarm/sprinkler systems, HVAC systems, and controls are advantageous.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.

Cleaning Functions:
a.

Perform sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and refinishing of floors; clean, dust, and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; maintain restrooms; dispose of waste, change lights, etc.; ensure all areas of the facility are kept clean, sanitary, and orderly according to industry and/or district standards.

b. Collect litter within the schools and on school grounds. c.

Ensure safety during inclement weather, including shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, and snow removal from roofs, etc.

d. Apply cleaning chemicals following established safety protocols. e. Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment. f. Perform minor repairs and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff. g. Remove extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior surfaces (walls, doors, etc.). h. Operate the HVAC system of the assigned school; change belts, lubricate, or make adjustments as necessary. 2.

Administrative Functions:
a. Identify the need for maintenance service requests according to district procedures and ensure timely performance of maintenance tasks. b. Request cleaning supplies and materials necessary for assigned tasks. c. Maintain awareness of energy conservation and suggest methods and procedures to enhance energy efficiency. d. Secure equipment and supplies to protect against theft, loss, or abuse. 3.

Safety and Security:
a. Conduct daily inspections and maintain awareness of facility and equipment to prevent injuries or damage. b. Ensure proper building security at all times by locking, securing, and coding out the building at the end of the shift. c. Verify that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as needed. d.
