Role Summary: The Inpatient Coding Specialist plays a crucial role in the clinical evaluation and data extraction of inpatient discharges. This position involves the meticulous selection of primary and secondary diagnoses to ensure accurate Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) assignments, which are essential for quality data management and reimbursement processes. Collaboration with the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) team is vital to enhance physician documentation that supports accurate coding assignments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance of the Coding Manager and/or Lead, the Coding Specialist III is tasked with coding patient accounts, demonstrating high-level technical skills and expertise.
- Analyze physician/provider documentation within inpatient health records to identify principal diagnoses, secondary diagnoses, principal procedures, and secondary procedures.
- Assign appropriate Medical Severity Diagnostic Related Groups (MS-DRG), Present on Admission (POA), Severity of Illness (SOI), and Risk of Mortality (ROM) classifications for inpatient records.
