Job Responsibilities

This Institutional Physician role is a key member of the internal health services multidisciplinary team, operating a medical practice within the correctional facility. The practice is supported by a Nurse Manager overseeing the health services system at the site.
Key responsibilities include delivering professional medical care and managing medications for inmates, with support from nursing staff.
Responsibilities encompass analyzing and interpreting patients' medical histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to formulate accurate diagnoses.
Diagnosing or treating urgent healthcare issues, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries is essential. Recommendations for diagnostic or therapeutic interventions will be made with careful consideration of safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.
Prescribing medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost, as legally permitted, is a critical function.
Implementing appropriate chemical or mechanical measures to assist inmates in improving behaviors is also part of the role.
Assisting in the preparation and modification of treatment plans and recommending suitable programs is expected.
Providing education to patients about self-management of acute or chronic conditions, tailored to individual circumstances, is essential.
Delivering evidence-based health education to the inmate population is a vital component of this position.
Assignments to additional duties or locations may be necessary to fulfill the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited medical college.
Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty.
Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia.
Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty.
Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques required to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
Comprehensive understanding of mental illness and current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria.
Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions suitable for the assigned population.
Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Additional Considerations
Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment is preferred.
