Position Overview: The Surgical Nurse Assistant (SNA) operates as the primary surgical assistant under the guidance and oversight of the lead surgeon during the surgical procedure. The SNA will also fulfill the responsibilities of a Registered Nurse, based on departmental requirements. This role is integral to supporting the mission, vision, values, and strategic goals of Mary Washington Healthcare, demonstrating a commitment to delivering exceptional service to patients, medical staff, and colleagues.
Incentive: $10,000 Sign-On Bonus available for external candidates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepares for procedures by assisting with setup and ensuring patient readiness through appropriate positioning, preparation, and draping.
- Supports the surgeon in various closure techniques, including skin, subcutaneous, and peritoneal closures, as well as performing hemostatic measures.
- Ensures a secure peri-operative environment by adhering to aseptic protocols during preparation and assistance with surgical procedures.
- Engages in patient transport and room turnover as necessary to optimize service efficiency.
- Acts in the capacity of a Registered Nurse, circulating cases as required.
- Serves as an educator, mentor, and resource for patients and fellow staff members.
- Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a surgical first assistant training program is mandatory.
- Possession of a valid RN License from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state is required.
- Certification as a Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) is essential.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR certification is required upon hire.
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred; Registered Nurses with an Associate's Degree in Nursing must obtain their BSN within five years of employment.
- Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) is preferred.
