Overview: The role of an Emergency Room Nurse is critical in providing immediate care to patients experiencing various medical emergencies. These professionals must be adept at identifying and managing life-threatening situations effectively.
Under the guidance of the unit supervisor, nurses deliver comprehensive patient care through a systematic approach that includes assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, adhering to established healthcare philosophies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Gather current symptoms and detailed patient histories, collaborating with healthcare team members to formulate, implement, and assess patient care strategies.
2. Conduct triage, taking into account both physical and psychological factors.
3. Provide basic life support and stabilize patients until the attending physician arrives, following nursing protocols and standards.
4. Monitor and document patients' vital signs accurately.
5. Assist physicians during examinations, diagnostic tests, and treatments.
6. Prepare and administer medications as prescribed, documenting any adverse reactions in line with nursing policies.
7. Deliver IV therapy and manage wound care.
8. Ensure the availability of necessary medical supplies and equipment for patient care.
9. Report any suspected cases of abuse to the appropriate authorities.
10. Develop and implement patient education plans as directed by the physician.
Patient Education: Instruct patients and their families on managing illnesses or injuries, covering:
- Post-treatment home care requirements
- Diet, nutrition, and exercise regimens
- Self-administration of medications
- Rehabilitation processes
- Referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up care
Maintain professionalism while managing multiple urgent tasks efficiently.
Document all care provided accurately and promptly in the designated formats.
Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing life-threatening dysrhythmias and participate in emergency response teams.
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited nursing program with current licensure in good standing is required. A minimum of one year of recent experience in an emergency room setting is essential. Current certifications in AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS are mandatory, with TNCC and NIHSS certifications preferred.
