We are seeking a qualified Building Inspector II to join our team in the Monterey area, California. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in technical building inspections, with a focus on enforcing compliance with building codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of new buildings, additions, and alterations to ensure compliance with the International Building Code;
  • Communicate complex building issues to the public, contractors, designers, and owners, emphasizing building regulations related to life/safety concerns;
  • Identify and resolve complex problems by conferring with developers, engineers, architects, property owners, contractors, and others regarding code requirements and alternatives;
  • Field questions regarding building requirements;
  • Make independent analyses during the inspection process;
  • Advise Planning, Engineering, and/or Code Enforcement personnel on building-related matters;
  • The ability to read and interpret various codes and apply good judgment in their enforcement;
  • Write clear and complete correction notices and inspection reports, and perform other related tasks as assigned;
  • Analyze, interpret, and accurately check building plans, specifications, and building codes;
  • Enforce codes with good judgment and impartiality;
  • Apply technical knowledge of building trades;
  • Perform duties within OSHA standards.

Requirements:

  • Must have B2, M2, E2, P2, and Commercial Combo certifications as a minimum.
  • Residential certifications are preferred.
  • Proven knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and ordinances related to building construction, including State Energy and Accessibility regulations;
  • Understanding of accepted safety standards, testing procedures, and methods of construction;
  • Principles and techniques of building inspection work;
  • Basic understanding of the plan checking process;
  • Computer knowledge and skills are desirable.

Essential Skills:

  • Maintain a healthy working relationship with contractors, builders, and the public;
  • Excellent customer service skills, including good listening and negotiating skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills;
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, and climb tall ladders;
  • Valid California State driver's license.
