Mental Health Technician Job Description

Job Summary:

The Mental Health Technician plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of quality care to patients at Southern Indiana Community Healthcare. This position works closely with mental health therapists, psychiatrists, and patients to ensure the provision of comprehensive care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with mental health services, including screenings, vital signs, and documentation.
  • Update treatment plans in the electronic medical record.
  • Provide education materials to patients regarding their diagnosis.
  • Assist with requests for records, prior authorizations, and correspondence.
  • Respond to patient messages and phone calls.
  • Coordinate patient and provider scheduling, including no-shows and cancellations.
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation.

Additional Duties:

  • May be designated to submit prescriptions on behalf of psychiatric physicians or nurse practitioners.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Mental Health Office Manager, Mental Health Providers, Office Managers, or Administrative Team.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience:
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as social work, counseling, or business with a focus on psychology.
    • 3 years or more of related mental health or medical experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Patient-focused approach, ensuring active listening, empathy, and compassion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, and the public.
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficient typing and computer skills, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Thorough knowledge of common office equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

  • General office/clinic conditions are pleasant, with good, clean working conditions.
  • Requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Requires normal visual acuity and acute hearing necessary for effective communication.
  • May require sitting or standing for long periods of time, as well as stooping, bending, and stretching.
