PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

The Aquatic Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing aquatic activities, ensuring the safety of swimmers, preventing accidents, and enforcing facility regulations. This role includes managing access to swimming areas, providing first aid when necessary, and assisting swimming instructors with lessons and other aquatic programs. Additionally, the position entails performing general maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Enforce facility rules with patience and consideration to maintain a safe environment for all patrons and staff. Alert swimmers to potential hazards and maintain order in swimming zones.
  2. Analyze situations effectively and respond promptly to ensure safety; maintain vigilant observation of designated areas to identify risks.
  3. Perform rescues for swimmers in distress.
  4. Administer first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR as required.
  5. Inspect and uphold cleanliness in swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned spaces.
  6. Maintain accurate records and reports as required.
  7. Assist with swim instruction as directed.
  8. Participate in various aspects of aquatic programming.
  9. Communicate effectively with colleagues and patrons both in person and via phone.
  10. Uphold the mission of The Salvation Army in all actions and communications during employment.
  11. Assist with the setup and breakdown of facility equipment as necessary.
  12. Implement and oversee the equipment checkout program, reporting any defects or required repairs.
  13. Ensure all aquatic equipment is properly maintained and inventoried regularly.
  14. Adhere to the prescribed uniform standards set by the Aquatics Manager/Lead Lifeguard, maintaining a professional appearance while on duty.
  15. Support instruction in alignment with American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor principles.
  16. Effectively communicate before small and large groups, demonstrating poise and enthusiasm.
  17. Provide constructive feedback to participants regarding their performance.
  18. Create a safe, enjoyable, and engaging learning environment for all participants.
  19. Maintain open lines of communication with supervisors regarding scheduling and coaching.
  20. Exhibit professionalism and a positive attitude towards students, patrons, staff, and management.
  21. Arrive on time and prepared to assist with instructional duties.
  22. Promote fairness and equality among all participants.
  23. Ensure any changes to classes are communicated efficiently to all participants.
  24. Perform additional tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Previous lifeguard experience is highly desirable.
  2. Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
  3. Availability for varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  4. Experience in public interaction.
  5. Ability to relate positively and energetically with clients, members, and staff.
  6. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting. Strong communication skills are essential.
  7. Comply with all health and safety regulations as outlined by the Health Department and The Salvation Army.
  8. Possess a philosophy of education and child development consistent with that of the Center and The Salvation Army.
  9. Experience working with children, parents, and staff in leadership, counseling, and educational roles.

CERTIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum age of 16 years.
  2. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  3. Successful completion of a criminal background check, including DOJ Livescan Fingerprint check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Proficient swimming ability and endurance are required. Must be capable of applying rescue and first-aid techniques effectively.
  2. Ability to lift and carry at least 40 lbs and extract victims from pools to safety.
  3. Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, bending, jogging, pulling, pushing, balancing, and reaching.
  4. Must maintain good physical and mental health to meet the demands of aquatic responsibilities.
