Special Education Teacher for Resource Programs

This position is designated for the academic year.
Compensation for Certified SPED Teachers begins at $73,000*
*This starting salary includes a $10,000 hiring incentive for Special Education, a $1,000 stipend for High School assignments, and a $3,000 bonus for late hires.
Core Responsibilities:
The primary objective of this role is to deliver tailored educational experiences to students with special needs, fostering their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. This includes the adaptation of curricula and the preparation of instructional materials to align with the varying abilities of students. The teacher may work in a self-contained classroom, as part of a team, or in a departmental or itinerant capacity as required.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Valid teaching certification in Texas with necessary endorsements for special education
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Understanding of the unique needs of students in the designated area
- Familiarity with the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and the Individual Education Plan (IEP) development and execution
- Ability to modify curriculum and instructional methods for special needs
- Strong communication skills
Experience:
- Preferred one year of student teaching or an approved internship
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Strategies:
1. Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to formulate IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each assigned student.
2. Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill enhancement programs for students, maintaining written documentation of preparation as required.
3. Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and tools that reflect an understanding of the diverse needs of students.
4. Deliver subject matter effectively in accordance with IEP guidelines, utilizing various instructional techniques and media, including technology, to cater to the individual needs of each student.
5. Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to adapt standard curricula as necessary and assist special education students in mainstream classes.
6. Regularly participate in ARD Committee meetings.
7. Engage in the selection of educational resources, including books and instructional media.
Student Development:
8. Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress through both formal and informal evaluations.
9. Provide or oversee personal care, medical assistance, and feeding for students as outlined in their IEPs.
10. Take on responsibilities for extracurricular activities as assigned, sponsoring approved activities outside of the classroom.
11. Consult with district and external resources regarding the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
Classroom Management:
12. Create a classroom environment that promotes learning and is conducive to the physical, social, and emotional growth of students.
13. Manage student behavior and implement disciplinary measures, including intervention in crisis situations and physical restraint when necessary, in accordance with IEP guidelines.
14. Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding the management of student behavior per IEP requirements.
15. Ensure the safety of students, equipment, materials, and facilities through necessary precautions.
16. Plan and oversee the work of instructional aides and volunteers.
Additional Responsibilities:
17. Maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, and colleagues.
18. Foster professional relationships with parents, students, and fellow educators.
19. Engage in professional development activities to enhance job-related skills.
20. Stay informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies relevant to special education.
21. Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documentation.
22. Attend faculty meetings and participate in staff committees as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Direct the work of assigned instructional aides.
Mental and Physical Demands:
Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and other instructional equipment.
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Frequent walking.
Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and assistance with students with physical disabilities; may involve prolonged or irregular hours.
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
