Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Zoo Curator to join our team at the City of Clovis, NM. The successful candidate will be responsible for the health and welfare of all zoo animals, coordinating zoo vector control needs with park maintenance, and maintaining an ongoing animal education program with local schools and the general public.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and report any changes in animal health to the Zoo Director.
  • Treat and medicate animals as needed.
  • Maintain accurate medical records on animals requiring specialized care.
  • Work closely with area veterinarians to ensure the health and well-being of all zoo animals.
  • Feed and water animals under medical supervision.
  • Maintain all state and federal permits for the zoo.
  • Develop and implement new educational programs for local schools and civic groups.
  • Coordinate with the Parks and Recreation Department on vector control methods.
  • Ensure deceased animals are properly disposed of.
  • Clean and disinfect hospital cages and associated areas.
  • Purchase medical supplies, vector control supplies, and educational materials.
  • Train and evaluate zoo volunteers.
Requirements
  • Associate degree or higher in a science or zoo-related field.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in a full-time zoological park or wildlife setting.
  • Good public speaking skills and ability to deal with the public effectively.
  • Must be in good physical condition and have a valid driver's license.
  • Must pass pre-employment screening.
Licenses and Certificates

Equivalent or higher of a New Mexico Class 'D' driver's license.

Physical Requirements
  • Stand or sit for prolonged periods.
  • Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist.
  • Lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight.
  • Use repetitive hand movements, fine coordination, and manual dexterity.
Working Conditions
  • Work typically performed outdoors with frequent travel to various sites and facilities.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • Occasional work beyond normal business hours.
  • Exposure to a variety of domestic and wild animals, airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
