Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Housing Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting families and youth involved with the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) who are facing homelessness or housing challenges. This position focuses on locating suitable housing, providing case management, and connecting clients with essential life skills and income support services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with clients to identify and address barriers to obtaining safe and affordable housing.
  • Research and present housing options that align with the specific needs of clients, including guidance on applying for subsidized housing.
  • Facilitate the completion of housing applications and assist clients in signing rental agreements.
  • Accompany clients to view potential housing units and help them develop a budget for housing expenses.
  • Support clients in planning their move and acquiring necessary furnishings for their new home.
  • Educate clients about their rights and responsibilities as tenants.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with housing authorities, landlords, and other relevant entities.
  • Provide ongoing support to clients after they have secured housing, addressing any issues that may arise.
  • Connect clients with community resources, including life skills training, counseling, and vocational programs.
  • Assist clients in applying for financial assistance through DCFS or other programs.
  • Coordinate efforts with assigned DCFS Case Workers and Housing Advocacy representatives.
  • Meet clients in various settings as needed to provide support.
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided using the designated electronic documentation system.
  • Participate in required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Complete all necessary training mandated by DCFS and engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Services or a related field, with a minimum of two years of experience in Supportive Housing Case Management. Preference for candidates familiar with Homelessness and Supportive Housing principles, as well as Harm Reduction and Housing First approaches.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and insurance.
  • Access to a smartphone for communication and collaboration purposes.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check in accordance with relevant personnel guidelines.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to engage effectively with individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Understanding of the underlying causes of homelessness.
  • Familiarity with the child welfare system and the operations of the Department of Children and Family Services.
  • Experience working sensitively with individuals facing severe disabilities and homelessness.
  • Strong skills in building rapport with adolescents and young adults.
  • Demonstrated judgment and the ability to work independently.
  • Capacity to function within an interdisciplinary team while also taking initiative.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to providing high-quality service.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in client follow-up.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in relevant technology.
  • Proficient in using computers, smartphones, and standard office equipment.
