Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in Gastroenterology Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs mission. The NP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. The NP practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position.

Responsibilities
  • Works in outpatient clinics caring for a variety of gastroenterology patient populations including initial consultation, patient follow-up, and interpretation of laboratory and diagnostic test results.
  • Medication management of gastroenterology and hepatology patients who require assistance between clinic appointments.
  • Screen patients for disease prevention and identify health risks.
  • Order laboratory, radiologic and other diagnostic testing and provide initial interpretations.
  • Serves as an agent of the gastroenterology practice regarding prescriptive authority in conjunction with gastroenterology fellows.
  • Assess patient's learning needs, development, and implementation of plans to meet needs by instructing patients and their families in self-care and treatment.
  • Participates in the operations of the Gastroenterology clinics as needed.
  • Manages the scheduling and arranges appointments and clinical reminders for patients enrolled in these clinics.
  • Reviews all laboratory, radiology reports, diagnostic testing, and consultative reports for patients seen in clinics and communicate these results to patients as required by VA directives.
  • Assists with various performance improvement and approved GI research studies in conjunction with GI attendings.
  • Coordinates and maintains cohesive workflow among GI Nurse practitioners and ensure all expected timelines for consults and clinics are met for timely and efficient patient care.
  • Triages outpatient hepatology and SCAN echo consults.
  • Serves on additional hospital committees as directed by the Chief of Gastroenterology.
