Position Overview

The Breast Imaging Specialist is tasked with identifying abnormalities in breast tissue through the execution of mammographic imaging studies and facilitating their evaluation for diagnosis.

Key Responsibilities

I. POSITION SUMMARY

A. This role is classified as a PRN position within outpatient imaging facilities.

B.

The primary duty of the Radiologic Technologist at Raleigh Radiology involves delivering diagnostic imaging services to outpatients, including Bone Mineral Density (BMD) assessments.


C. The Registered Mammographer is accountable for overseeing patient care for all individuals, adhering to established protocols, policies, and procedures.

D.

The radiologic technologist is certified in the following modalities:
Radiography, with potential rotation through various modalities as needed.

II. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Technologist Responsibilities 50%

a) Upholds professional care standards.

b) Implements Raleigh Radiology's policies and procedures.

c) Engages with patients to foster a positive experience.


d) Evaluates patients' conditions (both physical and psychosocial); prioritizes needs, sets objectives, and responds appropriately to fulfill those needs, including discharge education.


e) Records and reports relevant observations and reactions to the care provided.

f) Conducts examinations as per the physician's orders.

g) Assists with specific tests and procedures as required.

h) Participates in the efficient use of supplies.

i) Ensures that equipment is maintained and ready for use.

j) Collaborates with colleagues and physicians in patient care.

k) Maintains open lines of communication.

l) Utilizes educational opportunities with patients and significant others.

m) Initiates emergency protocols for sudden adverse events in patients.

n) Maintains a clean, safe, and well-equipped environment for patients and staff.

o) Regularly collaborates with team members both within and outside the department to accomplish job duties and assist others; exemplifies teamwork and professionalism in interactions with colleagues, visitors, and all staff.

p) Performs additional duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

2) Patient Care Activities 35%

a) Gathers initial patient history and assessment.

b) Completes and documents patient history forms.

c)

Conducts assessments that may include:
i) Vital signs, lab value interpretation

ii) Recent complaint history (reason for procedure)

iii) Relevant medical history

iv) Comprehensive list of medications and dosages

v) Allergies

vi) Other pertinent assessment details such as last menstrual period, tetanus history, weight, etc.

d) Continuously observes and assesses patients throughout their visit.

i) Evaluates the patient's physical and psychological state and their responses to procedures.

ii) Accurately reflects the patient's condition.

iii) Assesses (when appropriate) neurological checks, breath sounds, etc., as directed by the supervising Radiologist or referring physician. Notifies the appropriate personnel in emergencies.

iv) Initiates emergency procedures as necessary.

v) Documents assessments thoroughly.

vi) Evaluates and documents patient understanding of the procedure and aftercare.

(1) Records in the Radiology Information System (RIS) that teaching or aftercare instructions were provided.

(2) Documents when the referring physician is contacted in RIS and provides written instructions to patients for follow-up.

(3) Follows up within an appropriate timeframe on patients experiencing adverse reactions.

(4) Accurately documents relevant information on forms used by Raleigh Radiology.

e)

Provides reports to referring physicians post-procedure in the Imaging Department by:

i) Being concise and accurately reflecting physiological and psychological facts regarding each patient.

ii) Communicating reports immediately upon procedure completion and/or patient discharge.

iii) Initiating communication with peers or other relevant personnel to ensure continuous quality patient care.

(a) Keeps the physician informed of any changes in the patient's condition.

3) Safety/Infection Control 10%

a) Adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures.

b) Reports unsafe equipment and ensures follow-up.

c) Assesses patients and plans accordingly for safety and infection control.

d) Ensures that all necessary equipment for care provision is readily available and functional.

e) Reports incidents and unusual occurrences per department policies.

4) Additional Duties 5%

a) Applies principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age-specific needs and provide appropriate treatment and care.

b) Maintains strict confidentiality of all facility and employee/patient-related information.

c) Performs other assigned duties as needed.

III. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE

A

Education:
Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as both a Radiographer and Mammographer.

B

Experience:


Previous experience in a high-volume office or hospital setting is preferred.

C

Certification:


  • CPR certification is required or must be obtained within the first six months of employment. Continuous CPR certification is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of the registry for Radiologic Technologists with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists must be achieved within twelve months of employment. RT-R (ARRT)

Licensure:
None

IV. DESIRED SKILLS

Fundamental patient care skills, including first-aid and CPR. Proficient technical skills in diagnostic radiography are essential. Ability to work independently, make informed decisions based on patient conditions, and follow directives. Flexibility, reliability, and professionalism are required.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


Must be able to read printed material without strain, with or without glasses, and possess the ability to hear conversational voices, with or without hearing aids, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily; may be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Frequent, prolonged periods of standing and/or walking are required. Must be able to lift, position, push, or transfer patients. Subject to rotating holidays or shifts.
