Job Summary

The Registered Nurse - Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) is a critical role within the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service at the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System. As a member of this interdisciplinary team, you will provide comprehensive, accessible, and Veteran-centered mental health nursing care management to a defined patient caseload.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and triage mental health needs of BHIP patients on assigned teams.
  • Liaise with Primary Care Providers and Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) and Specialty clinics staff at the VA ACC to advocate for Veteran needs on a case-by-case basis.
  • Identify target patients considered high risk for increased morbidities.
  • Provide input on Treatment Plans for Veterans.
  • Consult with and provide education as needed for other BHIP staff regarding medical problems of the caseload.
  • Provide cross-coverage as needed or required with the MH&BSS Walk-In Clinic.
  • Provide direct patient care within the scope of practice, including phlebotomy and EKG testing.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Utilize care planning tools, assessments, and screening tools to plan and implement care.
  • Provide referrals to VA and non-VA care sources to meet the needs of Veterans.
  • Identify and develop plans to alleviate barriers to care, such as accessibility, affordability, and availability.
  • Maintain accurate Veteran records while adhering to regulations protecting patient confidentiality.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and families to assist with problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Complete special projects and duties as assigned.
Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Compressed/Flexible: Not Available. Telework: Not Available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Qualifications
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience

1 Year Behavioral Health experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment.
