CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-South is strategically located to provide surgical and medical services for patients in the region. The facility is licensed for 158 beds and offers a comprehensive array of medical and surgical services, including pediatrics, obstetrics, skilled nursing, emergency care, intensive care, as well as advanced diagnostic and imaging services. The hospital features a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, allowing mothers to stay close to their premature or special needs infants.
Key Responsibilities:
•Meets the expectations of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
•In alignment with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, provides nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.
•Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with their level of practice.
•Administers medications and treatments according to established protocols; monitors for side effects and the effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
•Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.
•Assesses educational needs and provides guidance to patients, family members, and/or caregivers; identifies issues and resources.
Core Competencies:
Standard I: Utilizes the Nursing Process
•Employs critical thinking skills to evaluate the basic physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of patients and families.
•Communicates findings to relevant healthcare team members.
•Develops and implements a specific plan of care, modifying it to meet individual patient needs using evidence-based practices.
•Implements patient care and therapeutic procedures; monitors and documents the progression of treatment and educational goals.
•Evaluates the care and treatments provided to patients and their responses.

•Must be capable of performing unit-specific competencies based on the designated patient population's needs.
Standard II: Patient Throughput & Patient Flow Process
•Anticipates and plans for admission, discharge, and transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.
•Utilizes appropriate communication systems and tools to streamline the discharge process.
•Coaches on tools and techniques for verifying orders to ensure accuracy.
Standard III: Unit Operations
•Plans, directs, and evaluates overall nursing care and functions within a specific nursing unit during assigned shifts.
•Demonstrates responsible stewardship in the proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
•Assesses departmental staffing needs and actively participates in resource allocation efforts.
•Educates and trains others on operational, ethical, and regulatory standards within the industry.
Standard IV: Safe Practice/Quality Care/Regulations
•Incorporates patient safety practices and guidelines to foster a safe environment, resulting in positive patient outcomes.
•Demonstrates accountability for nursing research and quality improvement initiatives.
•Provides evidence-based nursing care.
•Effectively communicates patient information across the continuum of care.
•Possesses knowledge of federal, state, and local healthcare-related laws and regulations, ensuring compliance in healthcare practices.
Qualifications:
Experience:
- Preferred: 1 year of experience in the relevant nursing specialty.
- Preferred: Completion of a Perinatal RN Residency or recent practice in a Perinatal Setting.
Education:
- Preferred: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
- All newly hired experienced RNs must complete New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of employment.
- New hires will be precepted by a designated trained staff member, with initial onboarding validated through successful completion of designated organizational entry competency validation and Perinatal Department-specific competency validation.
- Completion of all annual competency verification requirements is mandatory.
Licenses/Certifications:
- RN License in the state of employment or compact.
- BLS certification required.
- Current STABLE certification at time of hire for experienced nurses; within 4 months for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty, with ongoing maintenance required thereafter.
- Current NRP certification at time of hire for experienced nurses; within 60 days for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty, with ongoing maintenance required thereafter.
- Current ACLS certification preferred.
