Senior Clinical Coding Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Coding Specialist to join our team at MD Anderson Cancer Center. As a key member of our coding team, you will be responsible for analyzing medical records and abstracting clinical data to assign accurate codes in accordance with ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding classification systems.
Key Responsibilities- Analyze medical records to audit and abstract clinical data, ensuring accurate code assignment and compliance with coding guidelines.
- Review patient encounters for accurate code assignment of diagnoses and procedures in Epic.
- Assign appropriate modifiers and apply guidelines as indicated through the Limited Coverage Diagnosis (LCD) and the National Correct Coding Initiative (CCI).
- Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of institutional coding policies and procedures, as well as ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT-4 coding guidelines.
- Conduct coding and compliance research as necessary and maintain coding knowledge and skills through continuing education activities and literature reviews.
- Meet or exceed department production and accuracy standards, and query physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or if documentation is inadequate.
- Identify and apply knowledge of global periods and modifiers, and identify and report documentation issues.
- Serve as a resource concerning clinical coding practice, policies, and procedures, and initiate high-level decision-making by auditing professional services according to CMS and AMA rules and regulations.
- Resolve coding edits and denials by performing second reviews of medical record documentation and code assignments.
- Associate's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related healthcare field.
- Five years of clinical coding experience for complex or multi-specialties, or three years with a preferred degree.
- One or more of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, COC.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment skills test administered by Human Resources.
This position requires working in an office environment and may involve exposure to human/animal blood, body fluids, or tissues.
