Position Summary
The Activities Coordinator, under the guidance of the Day Center Manager, will oversee the Day Center's activity programs, ensuring that the Activities Team effectively implements engaging and therapeutic activities. This role is crucial for the design and execution of daily, monthly, and special event activities aimed at enhancing or preserving the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of participants, thereby promoting their full engagement in life.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate as a member of the interdisciplinary team (IDT) during assessments and daily updates, reporting any changes in participants' baseline status.
- Provide insights to the Day Center Manager regarding the effectiveness of care plan interventions.
- Organize both group and individual activities that cater to the cognitive, physical, social, psychosocial, spiritual, and artistic needs of participants.
- Develop a variety of activities, including exercise sessions, arts and crafts, celebrations for birthdays and holidays, recreational games, cognitive groups, and community outings.
- Coordinate with other operational departments such as transportation, nutrition services, social services, nursing, and rehabilitation.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including records of participant activity engagement and assessments as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
- Assist in gathering participant consent forms for photography when necessary.
- Plan and facilitate activities tailored for a dementia-specific population, ensuring a smooth flow of quiet room activities.
- Support the Day Center Manager in maintaining compliance with assigned responsibilities.
- Uphold the confidentiality of participant information and report any concerns directly to the Day Center Manager.
- Provide coverage for other members of the activities department as required.
- Attend and contribute to Activities Department meetings.
- Assist the Day Center Manager in ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are available for recreational therapies.
- Prepare and submit inventory reports to aid in effective procurement and budgeting.
- Help develop and analyze Recreational Activities Satisfaction Surveys.
- Collaborate with the Day Center Activities Manager to train and guide Activities Assistants.
- Exhibit workplace behavior that aligns with the organization's core values of integrity, respect, patient-centeredness, encouragement, and high-quality care.
- Participate in staff meetings, in-services, projects, and committees as assigned.
- Adhere to the center's practices, procedures, and policies, including attendance and break times.
- Accept assigned duties in a cooperative manner and perform other related tasks as needed.
- Maintain flexibility in work hours.
- May require the use of a personal vehicle.
Education & Experience
- A minimum of two (2) years of proven experience in activities or therapeutic recreation services, particularly with the geriatric population.
- At least one (1) year of documented experience working with frail or elderly individuals.
Educational Requirements
- A High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Spanish-speaking skills are preferred.
- Experience in planning and hosting events is beneficial.
- Must be medically cleared for communicable diseases and have up-to-date immunizations before engaging in direct participant contact.
Skills & Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of activities and recreational therapy techniques relevant to the elderly.
- Advanced understanding of principles and techniques for engaging with frail elderly individuals.
- Creative skills to design, develop, and implement diverse activities that meet varied participant needs.
- Experience in working with volunteers and vendors.
- Strong communication skills with participants, family members, and staff; ability to foster trusting relationships.
- Capacity to work effectively and harmoniously with staff, elderly individuals, public and governmental agencies, and service providers.
- Well-organized, dependable, flexible, and resourceful.

- Ability to encourage participants to make their own choices.
- Proficient in presenting programs to groups of participants.

- Ability to access all areas of the Day Center throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds occasionally, 15 pounds frequently, and 7 pounds constantly; assistance from another qualified employee is required for lifting or transferring objects over 25 pounds.
- Requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; frequent sitting, standing, walking, and repetitive movements; occasional bending, reaching, squatting, and kneeling.
- Work is primarily conducted in an indoor, well-lit, well-ventilated, heated, and air-conditioned environment.
