Job Overview
The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an essential in-house position that guarantees the delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based care to obstetric patients while effectively managing hospital resources in a clinically appropriate manner.
In settings where residents and/or medical students are present, this role may encompass supervision and educational responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 24-hour in-house call coverage.
- Work in high-volume labor and delivery units with over 3,000 deliveries annually.
Core Duties:
+ Ensure the prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by maintaining inpatient obstetric care that meets or exceeds current standards.
+ Collaborate with the obstetric care team to identify and address any clinical concerns, involving:
a. Medical students
b. Nursing staff
c. Resident physicians
d. Maternal-fetal medicine fellows
e. Advanced practice providers
f. Attending physicians
+ Manage unit resources in a clinically appropriate manner, including:
a. Prioritizing labor inductions
b. Prioritizing cesarean deliveries
+ Provide on-site obstetric care for patients with:
a. No prenatal care
b. Prenatal care from non-privileged providers
c. Emergencies requiring immediate attention
+ Facilitate transfers from outside hospitals, ensuring all relevant team members are informed of pending arrivals.
+ Lead scheduled safety huddles and conduct post-event debriefings.
+ Offer clinical support to other OB/GYN attendings and advanced practice providers, which may include:
a. Second opinions on fetal heart rate interpretations
b. Assistance with obstetric emergencies
c. Surgical assistance during cesarean deliveries and laceration repairs
d. Management of multifetal deliveries
+ Supervise resident physicians in managing obstetric patients, including:
a. Triage evaluation
b. Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
Qualifications:
- Doctorate from an accredited Medical College
- Licensure as a Physician (MD or DO) in the State of Michigan
- DEA Registration in the State of Michigan
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry weights as specified in the job description.
- Frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting.
