The Marine Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the hiring, training, and evaluation of marine personnel. This role includes conducting inspections of tugboats, participating in SIRE inspections, and performing evaluations and navigation audits of Deck Officers through direct observations on board. The supervisor will also develop marine operational strategies and cost control programs for vessels, assist in project development, and manage personnel scheduling as necessary. Weekly operations reports will be generated to track performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the performance of Captains, Mates, and Deck Crews.
- Ensure compliance with State and Federal maritime regulations.
- Monitor adherence to company policies by crew members.
- Conduct inspections to assess repair and maintenance standards.
- Prepare vessels for SIRE readiness.
- Coordinate scheduling for SIRE inspections.
- Lead incident investigations and manage the safety program.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Respond promptly to operational challenges.
- Handle recruitment and performance evaluations of marine staff.
- Develop and implement cost control procedures for vessel operations.
- Conduct inspections of vessels to ensure maintenance standards are met.
- Support new project initiatives.
- Maintain ongoing communication with clients.
- Operate company vessels as needed under executive direction.
- Promote accident-free and spill-free operations.
- Facilitate training and professional development for marine personnel.
- Monitor and report on the safety records of vessels and crews.
- Contribute to the development of company operating procedures.
- Participate in the Spill Management team as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience at sea as a Master on tugboats, tankers, or oil barges, or equivalent military experience.
- A four-year degree in Maritime studies or a related field is preferred.
- Possession of a valid US Coast Guard Master's license for offshore towboats (200T minimum) and a Master of Towing Endorsement is required.
- Experience with ATB operations is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the tugboat and oil transportation industry is essential.
- Familiarity with tank barge, ship, and terminal/refinery operations is necessary.
- Understanding of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
- Completion of a 24-hour HAZWOPER training (including Incident Command System) within six months of hire.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- STCW Certification is required.
- Valid State Driver's license.
- Ability to work collaboratively with office staff and vessel crew.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Willingness to travel to various ports as needed.
- Ability to work effectively with others, demonstrating courtesy and good judgment.
- Capability to understand and follow complex instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Must be capable of making decisions and providing direction to ensure efficient service delivery.
- Physical fitness is required to board vessels at sea and in port.
- Regularly required to board tugs, barges, and ships in various weather conditions and at all hours.
