POSITION SUMMARY:
The Early Childhood Assistant Educator is an integral part of the Montclair YMCA team, upholding the qualifications for assistant educator status as outlined by the Department of Child Care Licensing and the Montclair YMCA's standards. Under the guidance of the Early Childhood Group Teacher, and in alignment with the mission and objectives of the Montclair YMCA, the Assistant Educator is tasked with supporting the classroom teacher in various instructional, administrative, and classroom responsibilities, while fostering a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere for all participants. The Assistant Educator plays a vital role in promoting the education, health, welfare, and safety of the children enrolled in their classroom and the center as a whole. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Welcome each child and parent upon arrival.
- Conduct visual health checks on each child upon arrival and document any concerns.
- Exhibit warmth towards children and model positive behavior through a calm and pleasant demeanor.
- Provide comfort to children as needed.
- Assist the teacher with instructional activities.
- Accompany children during outdoor play and other activities, ensuring supervision.
- Prepare cots/mats in the classroom as required.
- Reinforce learning through engaging tools such as puppets and manipulatives.
- Assist in selecting appropriate songs and stories for the class.
- Read and sing with the class regularly.
- Support fine and gross motor activities both indoors and outdoors.
- Help organize free play and afternoon activities.
- Utilize positive reinforcement techniques.
- Assist children with personal hygiene practices.
- Prepare materials for lessons and assist in setting up learning centers.
- Maintain an orderly classroom environment, including cleaning toys and organizing materials.
- Provide feedback to the teacher regarding children's progress and document incidents for evaluation.
- Attend all required meetings and contribute to classroom record-keeping.
- Engage in professional development through workshops and reading.
- Adhere to policies regarding boundaries with members, volunteers, and staff.
- Complete required training on Abuse Risk Management and follow safety procedures.
- Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior and adhere to mandated reporting procedures.
- Ensure proper sign-in and sign-out procedures for members, volunteers, and vendors.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Teacher or designated supervisor.
- Stay informed about the policies of Geyer Early Learning Center and comply with them consistently.
- Demonstrate loyalty to the YMCA, maintain professional integrity, and respect the confidentiality of families served.
- Ensure a safe and healthy environment at all times.
- Participate in risk management by ensuring the safety of all members and reporting incidents promptly.
- Deliver quality programs and maintain high standards in all activities.
- Attend mandatory training sessions and stay updated on current trends in risk management.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma required, along with 2 years of relevant experience with children.
- Must enroll in and complete a CDA program within the first year of employment if only holding a high school diploma.
- CPR, EPI, Asthma, and First Aid certifications must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to lead groups of children and create activities on short notice.
- Physical stamina and flexibility to engage in children's activities, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Capability to supervise children in various settings, including stairs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Physical demands include walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching, with reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds occasionally.
- Staff are required to assist with personal hygiene tasks, including diaper changes, in accordance with policy.
- The work environment is typically moderate in noise level.
- Staff must remain alert and attentive at all times.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $17.00 to $18.00
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
