POSITION OVERVIEW

The Junior Accountant will play a crucial role in managing various asset accounts and supporting senior accountants in maintaining plant asset records accurately and promptly, adhering to company policies and utilizing diverse accounting systems.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Gather data from both internal and external sources to accurately document financial transactions within the accounting systems and general ledger.
  • Ensure that all transactions are recorded, verified, and substantiated in compliance with company regulations and controls.
  • Guarantee compliance with relevant customer contract stipulations.
  • Accountable for the precision and promptness of transactions within the systems and general ledger accounts, applying analytical reviews to validate proper recording of transactions.
  • Prepare monthly forecasts and actuals for designated assets.
  • Evaluate account balances and margin account activities at month-end, producing well-supported account reconciliations, margin analyses, and SOX documentation.
  • Deliver monthly variance analyses on assets for management reporting.
  • Address and resolve inquiries from both internal and external customers, including audit questions from external auditors and internal auditing teams.
  • Provide specialized knowledge to colleagues within the Marathon Petroleum community regarding specific systems.
  • File necessary regulatory reports as mandated by state and federal agencies.
  • Aim to comprehend the full spectrum of operational accounting systems functionality, the specific assets managed, and the midstream business context.
  • Assist with projects as required and support other accountants as directed by management.
  • Offer assistance to senior accountants and/or accounting supervisors.
  • Maintain procedural documentation to outline the processes for asset bookings.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is mandatory.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Experience in the oil and gas sector is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar accounting software is advantageous.
  • Strong grasp of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) is essential.
