Job Summary

This position is located in the Nutrition Services Department of the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, New Mexico. The purpose of the position is to plan and implement a comprehensive nutrition and dietetic program for patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the diabetes and other outpatient programs, including nutrition services as part of the Innovations in Planned Care Reviews.
  • Review, select, develop, and disseminate suitable educational and counseling materials on normal and therapeutic nutrition for clients, community, and for gestational diabetic clients.
  • Assist with explanation of program and research findings to the Indian Health Service, Indian community, and educational and allied groups concerned with the control and prevention of Type 2 diabetes.
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy to individuals and nutrition education to groups in outpatient or community settings directed at control of diagnosed diabetics and other disease prevention.
  • Conduct nutritional assessment of clients, developing nutritional care plans with them and their families consistent with cultural, social, and physiological requirements.
  • Plan for and participate in group teaching and training of clients, staff, and community members to expand services and increase public awareness of control and prevention of diabetes.
  • Provide consultation to professional and paraprofessional staff concerning diets and nutrition; record information in medical records regarding nutritional requirements, patient's progress, education, follow-up, etc.
Requirements
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.

  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law, requiring contact or control over Indian children.
  • Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
  • Confidential Financial Disclosure Form required.
  • Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is required for all selectees prior to entrance on duty.
  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.
  • On-call hours or standby duty may be required.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
Education and Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Applicants must meet ONE of the following requirements for all grade levels: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science.

The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.

Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.

Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR, 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Applying professional knowledge, concepts, principles, and methodologies of the science of nutrition and applying the principles, practices, and procedures to provide optimal nutrition care to patients according to established and specific procedures; planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating nutrition programs; applying knowledge of medical practices, effects of medication, and the effects of other treatment modalities that affect patient's diet, evaluate diet habits, etc.

to counsel, teach, and educate the importance of quality food, physician's diet prescription to promote social and physical well-being of patients; served as a resource person on nutritional requirements and research related to diseases and prevention of such.

Must possess an active, unrestricted Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
