Job Summary

The Occupational Therapist plays a vital role in our healthcare team, working closely with patients and other care providers to provide Occupational Therapy services that maximize patients' functional abilities and independence in their daily living activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
  • Performs evaluative and therapeutic procedures under the order of a physician or other accepted healthcare provider while observing precautions, indications, and contraindications.
  • Evaluates patients per department protocols and establishes a therapeutic plan of care that includes functional long- and short-term goals.
  • Provides ADL training, assisting patients with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, dressing, oral care, and hair care.
  • Assists with ambulation, mobility, and positioning: transfers to and from bed/chair/toileting; includes the use of mechanical lifts as appropriate and proper body mechanics.
  • Seeks input from the patient and primary caregivers regarding the therapeutic plan of care.
  • Provides consultation to the referring physician and other members of the healthcare team regarding the therapeutic and discharge needs of the patient.
  • Monitors and evaluates the treatment effect and progresses the treatment program toward the functional goals established in the treatment plan of care.
  • Documents in the EMR all evaluative and therapeutic interactions with the patient per department procedures.
  • Recommends and obtains appropriate assistive devices to the patient ensuring that instruction has been given in their use.
  • Provides education to the patient or caregiver and documents response to teaching.
  • Refers patients appropriately to Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants and works collaboratively to ensure good patient care with other therapy professionals.
  • Understands and complies with Medicare, Medicaid, and other reimbursement regulations.
  • Submits charges for procedures per patient visit.
  • Ortho Practice - Works with surgical patients who have had joint replacements and abides by the standards of care set forth by St. Mary's Hip & Knee Replacement Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Supervises the activities of the assistant-level staff when appropriate, considering their level of education and training.
  • Provides mentorship to new staff during orientation, ensuring that the department orientation checklist and basic competencies are completed per departmental procedure.
  • Acts as Clinical Instructor to affiliating students per department procedure.
  • Assists in the supervision of volunteers working in the department.
  • Performs operational duties promptly.
  • Completes all operational paperwork per department procedure, including daily charges and Medicare Certifications when required.
  • Assists in the departmental Performance Improvement processes by completing the Chart Review Monitor as scheduled per department procedure.
  • Takes ownership of the department by active participation in departmental meetings.
  • Ensures department cleanliness and maintenance by routinely keeping office and clinical areas clean and neat.
  • Maintains required licenses, certifications, and competencies, and completes annual compliance courses on time.
Requirements

Bachelor's degree required. Masters or Doctorate preferred. Licensed as an OT in the State of Maine. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Lifting/carrying frequently up to 35 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Some stress related to high level of responsibility for quality care.
