Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team at the YMCA. As a key member of our aquatics staff, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and clean aquatic environment for our members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prevent Incidents: Maintain active surveillance of the pool area at all times, using American Red Cross standards to prevent incidents and ensure member safety.
  • Emergency Response: Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately, in accordance with YMCA policies and standards.
  • Member Engagement: Create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement, and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Safety Protocols: Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas, including maintaining appropriate lifeguard-to-swimmer ratios.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Check rescue equipment and the pool for hazardous conditions, and promptly report problems.
  • Chemical Testing: Perform chemical testing, when not guarding, as required, following safety standards and take appropriate action, including accurate record maintenance.
  • Training and Development: Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings, and support special events and assist in other areas as required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Physical Demands: Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard, including hearing noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, remaining alert with no lapses of consciousness, seeing and observing all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility, and meeting and maintaining the strength and lifting requirements as required by the lifeguard certification.
  • Leadership Competencies: Demonstrate inclusion, functional expertise, communication, and influence in your role.
Qualifications
  • Certifications: YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard CPR, AED & First Aid or equivalent.
  • Physical and Mental Readiness: Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Age Requirement: At least 16 years of age.
